Glossary | Important Numbers

Legal counseling on civil matters, including drawing of wills, landlord and tenant problems and powers of attorney is available to Ulster County residents age 60 and over. Contributions are accepted. Call 340-3456 for an appointment.

Glossary of legal terms:

Living Will - A signed, witnessed statement of the wishes that no medication, artificial means or "heroic measures" be used to prolong life.

Health Care Proxy - A form that gives the person you choose as your agent the authority to make all health care decisions for you, except to the extent you say otherwise in this form. "Health care" means any treatment, service or procedure to diagnose or treat your physical or mental condition.

Guardianship - A person appointed by the court to care for the financial and daily needs of the impaired person.

Executor - Person designated in a will to protect the assets, pay all debts, pay and distribute money or property and wishes of the person they represent.

Power of Attorney - A document that gives another person power to work on your behalf.
