Ulster County Archives Officially Opened

On Thursday October 10th, 2002, Ulster County Clerk, Albert Spada hosted a reception at the Ulster County Record Center to officially open the newest division of his Records Management Program - The Ulster County Archives. Florence Prehn and friends

The work of the Archives Division is available for review now through this web site. "For the first time in the history of Ulster County, people any where in the world will be able to read about the earliest records filed in this office", said Ulster County Clerk Albert Spada.

In addition to descriptions of archival records, the new site offers access to searchable indexes of Dutch Court Records, Naturalization Records and Marriage Records. Not hooked up to the internet? Not a problem! The Ulster County Archives has a computer dedicated for researchers.

For information about this and other services or to schedule an appointment to look at original archival records, call the Ulster County Records Center at 340-3415. Appointments are necessary.

Guests were treated to demonstrations of the new archives web-site, displays of recently published finding aids, exhibits of freshly conserved seventeenth century court records, and tours of the facility.Staff answering questions

The creation of the new Archives division, along with theHall of Records and Micrographics, in existence since 1988, fulfills a long term goal of the County Clerk's vision for a comprehensive Records Management Program. The Hall of Records Division provides for the storage, retrieval and destruction of inactive records. The Micrographics Division offers complete microfilming services. And the new Archives Division affords a number of services related to the archival records in the custody of the County Clerk - including description, arrangement, public access, and educational outreach.Legislative Chairman Ward Todd
