DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves the responsibility for performing professional nursing activities such as coordinating patient/resident care. The incumbent is also responsible for providing direct nursing care to patients/residents while carrying out approved nursing care plans. Incumbents are responsible for maintaining a high standard of nursing care in accordance with established nursing practices. The work is performed under the general supervision of higher level nursing personnel allowing for wide latitude in making professional judgements as they pertain to providing direct nursing care. Supervision may be exercised over the work of Licensed Practical Nurses and/or other support nursing personnel. When employed by the Golden Hill Health Care Center an incumbent is responsible for supervising certified nursing assistants as well as other nursing personnel. Does related work as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices and skill in their application; working knowledge of materia medica, hospital dietetics, sanitation, and personal hygiene; skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices; ability to understand and follow technical oral and written instructions; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to get along well with patients, physicians and others; ability to carry out successfully the therapeutic measures prescribed; ability to plan and supervise the work of sub-professional and non-technical personnel; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:

A. Possession of a current license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Education Department; OR

B. Possession of a limited permit to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse from the New York State Education Department with the following restrictions:

Incumbents with permits must be under the supervision of a nurse currently registered in New York State and if the permittee fails the professional licensing examination he/she must be terminated from the position of Registered Professional Nurse.

Note: Candidates meeting the qualification specified under B of this specification will be conditionally approved until such time as proof of license is submitted.

Special Requirement for appointment to Ulster County positions: In accordance with Ulster County Legislative Local Law Number 14 of 2007 or by other State and Federal Statutes, candidates for employment to all Ulster County positions must obtain clearance for appointment from the Department of Criminal Justice System or other mandated Federal and State regulatory authority based upon fingerprinting and a criminal history background check. This position will require a criminal background check and a candidate will be required to complete and sign a Criminal Background Investigation Release Form. Upon a conditional employment offer, a candidate will be required to be fingerprinted accordingly.
