Ulster County Legislature Majority Leader Richard A. Gerentine gave his 2003 Republican Majority Platform Address at the March 18th meeting of the Ulster County Legislature. "Tonight we began to write a new chapter for Ulster County government" stated Majority Leader Gerentine. "Tonight, I offer that we put partisan politics aside and work together with our fellow legislators from the other side of the aisle for the betterment of Ulster County. Gerentine concluded by saying "the motto we might have to abide by is, DO MORE WITH LESS."

In other business, the Legislature voted unanimously to appoint Elizabeth Alfonso, to fill the vacancy left by her late husband Daniel L. Alfonso. Elizabeth holds the same values and commitment that Danny did, and she will be a great asset to the people of Ulster County.

The Legislature issued a proclamation designating March 2003 as Girl Scout Month in Ulster County. Legislator Alice Tipp presented Rena Hill, CEO and

Margaret Phelan, President Elect of the Girl Scouts of Ulster County, the proclamation.Rena Hill and Margaret Phelan awarded Chairman Ward D. Todd and Legislators Alice Tipp and Fawn Tantillo a one-year membership to the Girl Scouts of Ulster County for their dedication and support throughout the years.

Ulster County lawmakers approved a three-year extension of a contract with the Modoc Tribe of Oklahoma who plan to build a casino in the Town of Wawarsing.

Supporters of the project say that by extending the contract the Legislature has in good faith protected the interests of the residents of Ulster County by securing $15 million for seven years. The tribe could receive approval from the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs and the State of New York without Ulster County receiving any compensation.

"The fact is casinos are coming," stated Legislator Sue Cummings. "Whether you’re in favor of casino gambling in Ulster County or opposed, you should vote in favor of this agreement," continued Cummings.

In addition, Ulster County Legislature Minority Leader Gary Bischoff also delivered his 2003 Democratic Platform Address.
