FROM: ULSTER COUNTY OFFICE DATE: April 22, 2005 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE APRIL 22, 2005 NATIONAL JUROR APPRECIATION WEEK PROCLAIMED At the April 14, 2005 Legislative Session, Legislator Albert Meyer, Chairman of the Criminal Justice/Public Safety/Stop DWI Committee, presented a Proclamation designating the week of May 2 – May 6, 2005 as National Juror Appreciation Week to Richard B. Mathews, Commissioner of Jurors, and his office staff: Terri Johnston, Helena Phillips, Patricia Vaughn, and Charles Redmond. The proclamation stated that "juries are essential to a fair, reliable, citizen-based system of justice, and the decisions that jurors make affect millions of lives every day and have a profound impact on our society. Without the participation of jurors, we would not be able to guarantee our right to have a trial by jury. By entrusting jurors from the community to decide legal cases, we reinforce our belief that everyday people can make correct decisions and that we are an open, democratic government." For additional information, please contact the Commissioner of Jurors Office at (845) 340-3050.
